How To Read eBooks on Your Mobile
Reading ebooks on a Mobile
One of my to do's this year is to read quality books. My dilemma is that I don't have a lot of money to spend and I don't own a fancy e reader. I do have a cellphone though that I found out could read java files.
I went on a search to find out just exactly how to do this. I had some pdfs of some books that I had been wanting to read. After an exhaustive search on the internet I learned that it would take a few steps to get it done but I would definitely be able to read books on my phone.
It took me some time to research this and I would like to provide an easy step by step process for those who may be looking for the same solution.
pdf to txt file
The first step is to convert your pdf file to txt. Java enabled phones can only recognize JAR files. A pdf can't be converted to a JAR file but it does recognize a txt file.
There are 2 easy ways to do this. The first is that you open up your pdf and click on file-> save as-> then choose txt. The other option if this is not available to you is to convert your pdf to text online.
I've found a couple of reliable sites to do this called Comet Docs (http://cometdocs.com) and Online- Converter (http://www.online-convert.com). For Comet Docs you upload the file and they convert it for you. You need to provide your email address though because they send you the link where you can download the converted file from. Online- Converter does the converting right there and then and downloads automatically.
txt file to jar file
Now to get your txt converted to a JAR file is very complicated and you would need programming knowledge to do this. Luckily, there's a site that can do this with just 2 easy steps. It's called The Mobile Library (http://handybibliothek.qioo.de/qic.php) and it started as a student project in Berlin.
It's a German language site but they provide an option to translate to English on the upper right hand corner.
Uploading Your ebook to Your Mobile
The next step should be fairly easy but may differ with the kind of phone that you have. My phone is a Nokia X2. I use a memory card reader to connect to my computer but you may be able to connect with a USB cable.
Once I've connected the computer I go to my Received Files folder and just copy the ebook there. The file name ends with .ebook.
Reading Your eBook
Once you have the ebook on your phone you'll be able to read, bookmark and even have options to customize your reading preferences.
It takes a little time to load when you first open it and when you move on to the next chapter. You can change the page color, font color, font size, etc.
This solution is not necessarily the easiest or the best but it works for those that are looking for that option to read ebooks on their mobile.
